5th International Conference of Sociocybernetics
SOCIAL KNOWLEDGE FOR THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD

Lisbon, Portugal, July 26-31, 2004
CONFERENCE THEME:

The Conference is intended to initiate a dialogue among those social sciences that deal with complexity in connection with their efforts to expand our knowledge of the concrete social processes and problems of the contemporary world. Its strategic goal is to encourage the production and application of holistic, sociocybernetic frameworks.

The theme was chosen to be sufficiently broad so as to accommodate such issues as globalization; information, learning, and knowledge societies; the new information and communication technologies; social and economic polarization; global and local cultures; and the new social reality of the post-Cold War social world. The conference will discuss problems arising from changes in systems on interactional, organizational, and societal levels in which communication and self-reflexivity are key elements. It will also provide a space in which to address how social change has fostered a growing complexity within individual lives in respect to the construction of individual identity, morality and ethics, emotions and feelings, and the development of personal strategies.
Although most contributions are expected to focus on the practical application of knowledge concerning complexity, papers dealing with epistemological, methodological, and normative-ethical issues of the specified problem area will also be welcomed.
