1. POSITION:
 He held several positions in marketing and labor market research from 1961 till 1968, when he became head of the methodology section of SISWO (Netherlands Universities' Institute for Coordination of Research in Social Sciences) - a function he kept until his pensioning per October 15, 1998.


2. WORK EXPERIENCE:
 He (co-)edited several volumes in both fields, alienation theory and research on the one hand and general systems theory/cybernetics on the other, often combining these two approaches as he did in his PhD. thesis "Alienation Theories: A General Systems Aproach" (Oxford, Pergamon Press, 1980), which he defended in 1980 (see below).

His edited volumes on alienation derive from sesssions of the Research Committee on Alienation Theory and Research (RC36) at successive World Congresses of Sociology (1974, 1978, 1982, 1990, 1994) of the ISA, which he (co-)organized. He was a long-time secretary (1972-1982 and 1987-1988) of this Research Committee, and its president from 1988 until 1994. From January 1983 until January 1987 he was Executive Secretary of the ISA (International Sociological Association), and hence temporarily stepped down as RC36 secretary to prevent a conflict of interests.

In 1970 he was one of the founders of the Dutch Society for Systems Research, and fulfilled several board functions there until recently. He organized, or co-organized together with RC51 member Johannes van der Zouwen, Sociocybernetics Sections at the triannual WOSC-congresses in Amsterdam (1978), Mexico City (1981), Paris (1984), London (1987), New York (1990), and Bucharest (1996 - our famous Bucharest conference). In 1995 he became secretary of our then still Thematic Group (TG02), which became a Working Group in November 1996 (WG01), and finally was promoted to Research Committee (RC51) at the recent Montreal World Congress of Sociology.
