the six member states wanted to have the Treaties of Rome ratified
as quickly as possible. They were ratified in each country by a
large majority, only in France a major opposition of Gaullists,
Communists and Poujadists rejected the project. After ratification
in all six signatory states, the Treaties establishing the European
Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community
(EAEC) entered into force on 1 January 1958.
