Chairman of the Danish Neutron Scattering Society Kell Mortensen represents the neutron users in Denmark. Board member of DanScatt, which is an instrument center with the aim to support Danish scientists and students performing neutron scattering research. Funding are provided for travelling expenses connected to neutron experiments and conferences, and specialized materials costs connected to neutron experiments.

ESSS

Vice-chairman of the European Spallation Source Scandinavia The ESS Scandinavia Consortium (ESS-S) presented an Expression of Interest to host an ESS facilty in Lund. It is formed by scientists with support from the Swedish Research Council and the Norwegian Research Council, the major universities in Scandinavia, a number of laboratories and institutes, and regional political and business related organisations.
Member of the board of the Danish National Science Foundation The aim of the Foundation is to identify and support groups of scientists who, based on international evaluation, are able to create innovative and creative research environments of the highest international quality. A Board of Trustees with nine members is responsible for the Foundation. Kell Mortensen is one of this nine, nominated by the Joint Committee of Directors at the Governmental Research Institutes.
Working for the ESS project Kell Mortensen was member of the ESS Instrumentation Task Group, working to consider the general advantages and disadvantages of SANS (Small-Angle Neutron Spectrometer) on the ESS as compared to the best available elsewhere for the ESS target stations. He was moreover member of the Scientific Advisory Groups on Soft Condensed Matter and on Nanotechnologies
Member of theDanish Graduate School of Polymer Science Member of the board of the Danish Graduate School of Polymer Science aiming at optimizing science-based education and ensuring a high international academic level to meet the future needs of well-trained specialist within the field of polymer science and related areas.
Advising to the Swiss neutron source: member of the Scientific Committee of SINQ Kell Mortensen is one of the 10 external international experts in the field of neutron scattering componing the Scientific Committee of SINQ. The commitee gathers twice a year to discuss strategic items concerning SINQ and its instrumentation and also to review the submitted proposals. It then makes recommendations to the PSI directorate. Usually the committee members are exchanged in rotation every third year.
