“THE LOIRE…A BEAUTIFUL STORY”

The St. Etienne de Vigan and the Maisons-Rouges dams on the Allier and Vienne rivers, both tributaries of the Loire, were recently dismantled as part of the "Loire Grandeur Nature" plan. Local citizen groups had for many years pushed the French Government to promote a new policy for sustainable management of the Loire basin.

The Loire Grandeur Nature plan aims to restore the Loire’s natural course. The plan not only aims for ecological restoration, but also seeks economic improvements for the inhabitants of the area, since the benefits derived from the existence of a free Loire are considered to be greater than those derived from a dammed river.
