This technical Workshop is co-organised by the EARSeL Special Interest Group (SIG) on Forest Fires (FF-SIG) and the Global Observation of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics (GOFC-GOLD) Fire Implementation Team.

This workshop follows four previous technical meetings held in Alcalá de Henares (1995), Luso (1998), Paris (2001) and Ghent (2003), and will be focused on fire effects assessment, although fire prevention and detection will also be covered.

A selection of the best papers presented at this workshop will be published in Journal of Geophysical Research, BioSciences serie (special issue). All abstracts will be reviewed by two members of the scientific committee.

The structure of the Workshop will be based on five invited lectures, three poster sessions and two round table discussion sessions. The lectures will deal with the following topics:

  • Global Burned scar mapping projects.

  • Atmospheric effects of fire.

  • Environmental dynamics after fire (regeneration, fire soil effects, landscape patterns...).

  • New sensors for fire detection (UAV, geostationary satellites, fire-dedicated satellites, etc.).

  • Modelling efforts for fire danger estimation.

The three poster sessions will cover the main phases of fire management, namely, fire prevention, fire detection and fire effects assessment. General discussions will follow the poster sessions, which will be the opportunity to present innovative work in the previously defined topics. Only invited lectures will be presented orally, to leave more time for sharing ideas among the attendants.

Additionally, two round tables will be held. These discussions will encourage the participation of end-users in remote sensing developments. Three end-user communities will be addressed: fire managers, fire ecologist and global change scientists.
